Anthony Barboza

@ Keith De Lellis Gallery New York

Beginning in 1963 and continuing into the present day, Anthony Barboza has enjoyed a long career in photography. One of the most important African American photographers of his generation, Barboza has excelled at capturing his subjects both on the street and in the studio. Perhaps best known for his photographs of singers and jazz musicians in the 1970's and '80's, Barboza's subjects span a wide range, from high-profile celebrities to anonymous children on the street of Jacksonville, Florida. The artist began his informal training in New York City, influenced and mentored by photographers Hugh Bell, Louis Draper, and Roy DeCarava. In these early days of Barboza's interest in photography, the artist was introduced to The Kamoinge Workshop, now Kamoinge, Inc., a network of professional photographers addressing the under-representation of black photographers in the art world. Kamoinge would be an important inspiration and support system for Barboza's photography throughout his career. Today, Barboza serves as president of the organization. LINK Keith De Lellis Gallery

Shadoks et Gibis

VARA television The Netherlands June 20, 1969
Shadoks and Gibis have one common goal:
who will be the first touch down on earth.

In 1969, when I was fifteen years old, I always hurried me to see the broadcast of the Shadoks et Gibis. Even though it lasted only five minutes, I did not miss it. All the tedious chores, washing dishes, tidying room or even just help my mother with the wash tub was not a problem for me. If I but in time to see these fantastic French animation. Still, years later, I see the pictures and irony in front of me.

Chantal Joffe @ Victoria Miro

Victoria Miro is delighted to present an exhibition of new work by Chantal Joffe. Joffe primarily paints expressive portraits of women and children, often in very large scale, sometimes 10 feet (3 m) tall. In a 2009 interview with Stella McCartney, Joffe said, "I really love painting women. Their bodies, their clothes - it all interests me." Source images for her personality-filled oil paintings include family photos, advertising, fashion magazines, and pornography. Working roughly from her photographic source material, Joffe introduces distortions to her depictions. In the McCartney interview, Joffe mentioned the photography of Diane Arbus as an inspiration for her art: "I find photography massively influential. Specifically, Diane Arbus, who I've been obsessed with my whole life. Her work has everything about the portrait of a human that you can ever want." A reviewer said of her "big rude paintings" that "she paints with a kind of easy control - effortless without being slick."He further points out that her paintings may give an initial impression of simplicity, charm, or childishness, but "they have an unsettling quality which gives the exhibition an odd, rather menacing mood. LINK victoria miro

1966

"It's a Man's Man's Man's World" James Brown

The song's lyrics, which Rolling Stone characterized as "biblically chauvinistic", attribute all the works of modern civilization (the car, the train, the boat, and the electric light) to the efforts of men, but claim that it all would "mean nothing without a woman or a girl." The song also states that man made toys for the baby boys and girls, and makes a comment about the fact that "Man makes Money", from other men. Before the song's fade, Brown states that man is lost in his bitterness and in his emptiness. Brown's co-writer and onetime girlfriend, Betty Jean Newsome, wrote the lyrics based on her own observations of the relations between the sexes. LINK youtube
