Frank Sciarone and Bernadette ten Hove

@ Phoebus Rotterdam

Frank Sciarone drawing

The Dutch artist Frank Sciarone draws and sculptures, with scale and architecture often play an important role. In 1998 Sciarone showed little 'Roma' drawings in the large gallery space beletage in 1994, immense sculptures (which even seemed to disappear into the homes of neighbors) in the smaller project room. This time some giant pencil drawings with reference to Italian Baroque architecture in a tenuous interplay in the space of the piano nobile combined with three relatively small sculptures, which uses ready-made building material.

The works from the series Present Presence of Bernadette ten Hove are based on portrait painting from the 15th to the 20th century. In the middle part of each work - exactly one third of the elongated vertical panels - with graceful turns of the trowel clothing and background put down. They are here together in a bright, monochrome color. This section contrasts sharply with the upper part where the face is held back in white, with black eyes; and with the lower part, which is painted gloss white. The "retaken" faces now look very contemporary - and look nevertheless returned to their origin. LINK phoebus

‪Ger van Elk‬

" Adieu a K", 2004‬

Ger van Elk (Amsterdam, 1941 - 2014) was a Dutch artist who worked with sculptures, painted photographs, installations and film. His work was generally seen as conceptual art and arte povera. Together with Marinus Boezem, Wim T. Schippers and Jan Dibbets, he was seen as one of the main representatives of these movements in the Netherlands. Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the Tate Gallery in London have work of Van Elk in their collection. Reflections on art history are an important part of his work. LINK Youtube

The Office for Curating

Niekolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk

For a Length of Time at Motive Gallery, Brussels

The Office for Curating is the generic name for a curatorial practice and an agency, formalised and established in 2012 by Niekolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk, and is currently active in and from Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The name and the seeming neutrality of this hybrid institute have been instigated to generate a buffer between oneself and the world, but foremost to be inclusive and responsive towards different complexities and conditions, and to allow these influences to enter the frame and approach them curatorially. In that, The Office for Curating acts as an assembler of a growing programme of exhibitions (including publications, texts and speech acts) and as a support structure for initiating exhibitions as a rise to the occasion – presented in different shapes and configurations, along different temporal structures and rhythms, as hosted by different institutes. LINK the office for curating

Jacques Tati

Jacques Tati was a French filmmaker. Throughout his long career, he worked as a comic actor, writer, and director. In a poll conducted by Entertainment Weekly of the Greatest Movie Directors, Tati was voted the 46th greatest of all time. With only six feature-length films to his credit as director, he directed fewer films than any other director on this list of 50. In early 1946 Jacques Tati and Fred Orain founded the production company Cady-Films, which would produce Tati's first three films. With the exception of his first and last films, Tati played the gauche and socially inept lead character, Monsieur Hulot. With his trademark raincoat, umbrella and pipe, Hulot is among the most memorable comic characters in cinema. Several themes recur in Tati's work, most notably in Mon Oncle, Play Time and Trafic. They include Western society's obsession with material goods, particularly American-style consumerism, the pressure-cooker environment of modern society, the superficiality of relationships among France's various social classes, and the cold and often impractical nature of space-age technology and design. LINK theguardian
