On The Road

On The Road
28 June - 30 November 2014
Pazo de Xelmírez & Park and Church of San Domingos de Bonaval
Santiago de Compostela Spain

Nam June Paik, One Candle, 1988

On the Road is an ambitious exhibition project, organised by the Government of Galicia, that takes place in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) between June and November to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Francis of Assisi's trip to Santiago de Compostela. The exhibition structure is intrinsically related to ideas underpinning the attitude of Francis of Assisi that are still highly topical. The exhibition's curator, Gloria Moure, has brought together a significant collection of works by 35 artists of varying origins, including some of the leading international figures in contemporary art of the last four decades. The exhibits include site-specific pieces such as those by Francis Alÿs, Jorge Barbi, Christian Boltanski, Tacita Dean, Jimmie Durham, Guillermo Faivovich & Nicolás Goldberg, Richard Long, Perejaume or Lawrence Weiner. LINK deasisacompostela

On Kawara

Much like the Today series, Kawara uses the number of days followed by the date the work was executed as his life-dates. So the piece entitled Title at the National Gallery of Art has Kawara's life-dates as 26,697 (January 27, 2006) which, when calculated, place Kawara's birthdate at December 24, 1932. Other series of works include the I Went and I Met series of postcards sent to his friends detailing aspects of his life, and a series of telegrams sent to various people bearing the message "I AM STILL ALIVE". Between 1968 and 1979, On Kawara created his information series, I Got Up, in which he sent two picture postcards from his location on that morning. All of the cards list the artist's time of getting up, the date, the place of residence and the name and address of the receiver another series of postcards, I Got Up At, rubber-stamped with the time he got up that morning. The length of each correspondence ranged from a single card to hundreds sent consecutively over a period of months; the gesture's repetitive nature is counterbalanced by the artist's peripatetic global wanderings and exceedingly irregular hours (in 1973 alone he sent postcards from twenty-eight cities). LINK baldessari

Annette Wehrmann

@ Badische Kunstverein

Annette Wehrmann (1961–2010) took part in the renewed politicisation of art since the 1990s. She employed strategies of self-organisation to develop a highly individual artistic stance – located somewhere between sculpture and intervention – that drew upon methods of conceptual and action art as well as the language of the Situationist International. Using ephemeral and cheap materials, she produced objects that explore critical tensions around major socio-political issues, dealing with topics such as money, religion, the brain, thinking, the city, the state, television and language. LINK badischer kunstverein

the official FIFA poster

The FIFA World Cup comes around but once every four years, and with it comes the official poster (most of these posters are in Vintage style, may be it come kind of tradition. Any how some of these are as iconic as a Gordon Banks save or Cruyff turn, others as forgettable as a goalless draw between Bolivia and South Korea. While recent editions have become increasingly corporate, taken as a whole they are a delightful slither of global graphic design history over the last 84 years. LINK more posters

Manifesta 10

Marlene Dumas

Pawel Althamer withdrew from Manifesta 10 earlier this year, stating that he could not participate in an event, which would “take place in the shadow of fear.” St Petersburg collective Chto Delat quit in March, saying “Neither curator nor institution are capable of rising to the challenge of a dramatically evolving political situation.” Yet others chose to take part despite Russia’s conflicts in Ukraine and its repressive new anti-gay laws, which prohibit the display of "gay propaganda". Just how this law would be interpreted at Manifesta, Europe’s roving biennial was unclear. Yet, following its opening at the weekend, it seems careful curation and deft artistic response has allowed the show to display works that engage with gay rights. Phaidon photographer Wolfgang Tillmans told the Guardian that his contribution was “probably the gayest show I have done." Spread across two rooms at the State Hermitage, Tillmans’ displays are filled images of discarded clothing as well as a photograph of a metal helmet from the Hermitage collection which some claim resembles a penis. Marlene Dumas, meanwhile, is showing Great Men, 16 portraits of well-known males who were either known or rumoured to be homosexual. It’s hard to see how these ink and pencil pictures could constitute "gay propaganda", since so many of the individuals portrayed led tragic lives. “When you start to acknowledge the stories of these men it breaks your heart,” Dumas told the New York Times. LINK manifesta10
