‪Summertime‬

‪Janis Joplin - Summertime (Live -1969)‬ @ Sweden

Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 - October 4, 1970) was an American singer-songwriter who first rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the psychedelic-acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist with her own backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. She was one of the more popular acts at the Monterey Pop Festival and later became one of the major attractions to the Woodstock festival and the Festival Express train tour. Janis Joplin charted five singles, and other popular songs from her four-year solo career include "Down on Me", "Summertime", "Piece of My Heart", "Ball 'n' Chain", "Maybe", "To Love Somebody", "Kozmic Blues", "Work Me, Lord", "Cry Baby", "Mercedes Benz", and her only number one hit, "Me and Bobby McGee". Joplin was well known for her performing abilities, and her fans referred to her stage presence as "electric". At the height of her career, she was known as "The Queen of Psychedelic Soul," and became known as Pearl among her friends. She was also a painter, dancer and music arranger. Rolling Stone ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004,[1] and number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art

Adel Abdessemed
L'âge d'or

6 October 2013 - 5 January 2014

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is pleased to present a landmark exhibition by Adel Abdessemed titled L'âge d'or. Curated by Pier Luigi Tazzi, this exhibition will include recent works including drawings, paintings, sculptures and videos, many created by the artist especially for this show in Doha.

Working across a wide range of media, Abdessemed transforms well-known materials and imagery into charged artistic declarations. Abdessemed has described himself as "an artist of acts," and his works are known for their forceful impact and symbolic resonance. Taking materials into great consideration, he is often provocative in their use; camel bones, gold, salt, brass, gum, and terracotta take on new and multiple meanings. LINK mathaf

‪Solomon Burke ‬

None Of Us Are Free‬

Solomon Burke was an American recording artist and vocalist, who shaped the sound of rhythm and blues as one of the founding fathers of soul music in the 1960s and a "key transitional figure in the development of soul music from rhythm and blues. He had a string of hits including "Cry to Me", "If You Need Me", "Got to Get You Off My Mind", "Down in the Valley" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love". Burke was referred to as "King Solomon", the "King of Rock 'n' Soul", "Bishop of Soul" and the "Muhammad Ali of soul". Due to Burke's minimal chart success in comparison to other soul music greats such as James Brown, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, Burke is often described as the genre's "most unfairly overlooked singer" of its golden age. Atlantic Records executive Jerry Wexler once referred to Burke as "the greatest male soul singer of all time".

Idris Khan

Beyond the Black @ Victoria Miro

Beyond the Black (20 September to 9 November 2013) marks an important departure from Khan's photographic based works and comprises a suite of large black paintings, a monumental site specific wall drawing and a series of works on paper, all of which consider the metaphysics of creativity.

In the exhibition's seven paintings Khan uses a mixture of black pigment, rabbit skin glue and slate dust, to create an absorbent ground which he applies to aluminium panels or directly to the wall and then sands back to produce a smooth, slate-like surface. The paintings are intensely dark with a dense radial constellation of words creating an image that suggests a contained energy emanating from a central point. LINK Victoria Miro

REAL DMZ PROJECT 2013:
From the North
August 21–September 22, 2013

About the REAL DMZ PROJECT
The REAL DMZ PROJECT inaugurated its exhibition program in 2012 by engaging with a number of sites in proximity to the demilitarized zone in Cheorwon. Organized as an ongoing platform for the development and dissemination of a vast array of investigation and research, the Project expanded in 2013 to include a monthly forum titled DMZ Human Science - Cheorwon as a way to foster research into the historical and geopolitical situations in the areas adjacent to the DMZ. With dialogue taking on such an important role in the project, the humanities symposium will be held in November this year in association with the Peace Museum, featuring presentations by international researchers, ecologists and artists.

The REAL DMZ PROJECT exhibition for 2013 continues along this trajectory of engagement with the loaded history of Cheorwon county, which takes up a third of the entire length of the DMZ. Located at the center of the Korean Peninsula, this geopolitically crucial area has long played a pivotal role for ruling powers. Subsequent to Japanese occupation, it was brought under the control of the Soviet military regime before becoming the site of many horrific confrontations and battles throughout the Korean War. Following the armistice agreement, part of the province was reclaimed when the military demarcation line was drawn along the 38th parallel between North and South.

Ilya and Emilia Kabakov

The Ship of Tolerance

It is a conceptual piece that is meant to reflect how divergent cultures interpret tolerance and how these interpretations overlap. The ship’s sails are stitched together from paintings by hundreds of local schoolchildren from different ethnic and social backgrounds, and will convey a message of tolerance and hope. By participating in the creation of this ship children will learn about respecting different cultures and ideas while appreciating how they differ from their own. In short, through this creative process they will both demonstrate and gain a vibrant lesson in tolerance. llya Kabakov has been making installation art since 1984. Working with Emilia Kabakov, he has become one of the medium's most important practitioners and theoreticians. He is a leading figure of the Russian art movement of the 1980s. LINK the Ship of Tolerance

Lieko Shiga

Lieko Shiga's belief in the transcendent power of the photograph verges on the religious. As the printed image reveals itself in the darkroom, Shiga plays with the axis of time, floating with the image before it settles, before it becomes permanent. The act of creating a moment of frozen time is akin to prayer for her. Now it exists: it is evidence. LINK Lieko Shiga

MANGA or MAMA

The world of MANGA
The makers of Samurai now confront you with the terrifying guards of Buddhist philosophy, bonded with the fierce and powerful heroes of Street Fighter. Shinkichi Tajiri’s Machines lead you into the enchanting world of MANGA. The versatility of manga art has never been shown so clearly. The Japanese Buddhist guards introduce the philosophy of manga in comics, anime and games. When after the fascinating story of the fighting machines of Shinkichi Tajiri, the beauty of manga art unfolds, the mysticism of manga can be grasped. The innovative photo art by Anderson & Low raises the question: are these manga inspired dreams of people, or people inspired dreams of manga? Their project Manga Dreams constitutes a major part of the exhibition.

MAMA
Proudly presents its highly anticipated jubilee book: Sweet Sixteen.
15 years of Showroom MAMA, in which we celebrate fifteen (now almost sixteen) years of activity. Providing insight into the dynamics and approach of MAMA through the years, Sweet Sixteen. 15 Years of Showroom MAMA reflects on how a small corner of Rotterdam's Witte de Withstraat became a defining platform for contemporary visual culture. The book also provides insights into MAMA's controversial projects and people in the form of interviews, articles, and a wealth of images. The book underlines the importance of the organization, both for the arts and the public.
