Jan De Cock

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
@ fons welters

For his sixth solo show at the gallery De Cock has turned the space into a 'sparse and splintered romantic landscape'; a realm of autonomous sculptures that modestly seek each other's company. While building on series from the past years, De Cock's recent installation displays both his oeuvre's cyclic structure as well as introduces new sculptural forms.

The exhibition follows Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: A Romantic exhibition, which was on display at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden in spring 2012. Again, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, icon of the sixties, is the leading character in an enigmatic narrative. Jacqueline embodies the romantic ideals of her age and symbolizes the beginning of a culture of the spectacle. Although remarkably conspicuous by her absence, we might still find her in subtle references, such as the colour pink reminding us of her famous Chanel suit. In this series of works, Jan De Cock stages Jackie as example of a specific era as well as a timeless concept. After all, her often imitated iconic presence questions the nature of an image and makes us wonder what lies behind (her beloved dark sunglasses). LINK fonswelters

The artists working in all simplicity under the circumstances which occur weekly at Malieveld. Although the works take place in public and can be watched by anyone, it should be noted that a large part of the work is doomed to fail and therefore not appropriate for a general audience. BRAUN Design Collection

For Sale
The BRAUN design collection consists of approx. 1000 different pieces, mainly from the years between 1955 and 1985. It is probably one of the most complete private BRAUN design collections of this period. The collection shows how Dieter Rams und the BRAUN Design Department, starting from 1955, managed to give technology a clear shape (form follows function), wrapping it in modern materials. The domestic appliances in particular reveal the impact of “BRAUN Design” on other designers and their product engineering. The collection is either suited for a private collector or a design or technical museum. The innovative aspect becomes evident especially by comparing it with the technical products of other manufacturers of the same time period. Dieter Rams can be regarded as one of the best and most influential designers of the 20th century. LINK Dieter Rams

Richard Mosse

The Pavilion of Ireland
at the 55th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia

Richard Mosse will represent Ireland with The Enclave, a major new multi-media installation at the 55th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia. The Commissioner and Curator is Anna O’Sullivan, Director of the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, Ireland. Ireland at Venice is an initiative of Culture Ireland and the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon. Mosse’s practice resides at the interface between documentary journalism and contemporary art. For centuries, the Congo has compelled and defied the Western imagination. Richard Mosse brings to this subject the use of a discontinued military surveillance technology, a type of color infrared film called Kodak Aerochrome. Originally developed for camouflage detection, this aerial reconnaissance film registers an invisible spectrum of infrared light, rendering the green landscape in vivid hues of lavender, crimson, and hot pink. LINK Richard Mosse

jeliliatiku

I created the body of my works in both images, forms, lines and colours to mirror, speak advocate, request, appeal and enlist the beholder’s attention to embark on philosophical meditation and journey into pictorial understanding of the simple transient facts inherent in their collective subject…This of course, is spatial awareness that take into consideration direct (or actual) spatial participation on the part of the observer. There is a recognition on the part of the artist that observer shares the space of the object.”

PIANO / KEYBOARDS: NELSON PADGETT
ENSEMBLE:
PHILIP GLASS ENSEMBLE
KOOR: ESTONIAN PHILHARMONIC CHAMBER CHOIR
T 22 JAN | GRONINGEN | DE OOSTERPOORT | 20.15h

Philip Glass composed the strong, almost hypnotic music (for Glass Ensemble) at the famous cult movie "Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance" by director Godfrey Reggio. Commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra Glass Koyaanisqatsi has worked for orchestra, Glass ensemble and choir, whose world premiere took place in 2010. The North Dutch Orchestra plays the Dutch premiere of his intriguing film (for orchestra, ensemble and choir) from the eighties: Koyaanisqatsi was a cult hit and is still relevant. A penetrating musical and visual vision of our relationship with the earth. Along with the Philip Glass Ensemble and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir we carry out this orchestration, with screening of the film. LINK NNO

Walter Ruttmann

Lichtspiel Opus I
@ Vimeo

"Walter Ruttmann's Lichtspiel Opus I premiered in Germany in 1921, the first abstract film to be publicly screened. In the film, Ruttmann mastered the technical means to realise his abstract imagery in film. He patented his particular technical methods in 1921. William Moritz provides an interesting description of his method: 'Ruttmann's first animations for Opus No. I were painted with oil on glass plates beneath an animation camera, shooting a frame after each brush stroke or each alteration because the wet paint could be wiped away or modified quite easily. LINK Vimeo

Neil Wedman

Selected Monochromatic Paintings and Works on Paper
@ Charles H. Scott Gallery
January 16 to February 24, 2013

Over his thirty-year career Wedman has moved fluidly between painting and drawing without preferencing one practice over the other. He has rendered drawings on the monumental scale of history painting as in The Brides, an eight foot by eight foot drawing on canvas, while the monochromatic greys of his recent paintings mimic the tonality of drawing. The new paintings, watercolours and drawings on exhibition at the Charles H. Scott Gallery are a continuation of Wedman's grey monochromatic series, which he began in 2007. Like earlier work in the series they depict images of spectacle, including flying saucers and underwater volcanoes, although Wedman denies the potential for extravagance these kinds of images inherently contain by obfuscating the image and emptying them of colour. LINK chscott.ecuad.ca

Each of the 432 months is accompanied by a sketch of a significant historical event, relaying Song’s longtime interest in socio-political history, individual experience, and art history.  LINK Asia Art Archive

Interview

@ Concept | NO | Store

DPhoto

Interview is an American magazine which has the nickname The Crystal Ball Of Pop. It was founded in late 1969 by artist Andy Warhol. The magazine features intimate conversations between some of the world's biggest celebrities, artists, musicians, and creative thinkers. Interviews are usually unedited or edited in the eccentric fashion of Warhol's books and The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again. In the early days, complimentary copies of Interview were often given away to the "in-crowd"; this was the start of the magazine's circulation, which hovers around 230,000. Toward the end of his life, as Warhol withdrew from everyday oversight of his magazine, a more conventional editorial style was introduced under editor Bob Colacello). However, Warhol continued to act as ambassador for the magazine, distributing issues in the street to passersby and creating ad hoc signing events on the streets of Manhattan, New York City.
