Fokker 100

The Fokker 100 is a medium size twin turbofan airliner from Fokker. Low operational costs and scant competition in the 100-seat short-range class led to strong sales when it was introduced in the late 1980s, but sales fell as competition increased. Production ended in 1997 with 283 airframes delivered. In August 2009, 229 Fokker 100 aircraft remained in airline service with 47 airlines around the world. LINK Fokker 100

Post Sofia: Museum of Socialist Art

Address: ul. Luchezar Stanev 7
Metro station: Joliot Curie/G.M.Dimitrov

The new museum showcasing art from the Socialist period (1944-1989). A large outdoor sculpture park has everything from the giant statue of Lenin that once stood in the centre of the city to the red star that topped the Socialist party headquarters. Smaller pieces reveal a gentler side to the Socialist ideals. The gallery inside has some excellent examples of 20th century modern art as well as the Socialist Realism genre we know from the period.

What is heroism in our time when war, exploits, and pathos are just part of a virtual show endlessly dissipating into mass circulation?
Our show is total. Starting from a well-structured 3D computer game, its powerful Hollywood effects are so wonderfully spent on saving Private Ryan, on a gala parade of Maximus' triumph in the Collosseo, and ending with specially selected TV reports from unknown and faraway places with exotic names... LINK read more

The wall poetry project in Sofia, Bulgaria 2004

The initial idea was of the Dutch ambassador to 'adopt' a wall in Sofia and to paint on it a poem. The initiative started on July 2004 by painting of So I Believe That Also You Are by Jan Hanlo on the back wall of the Museum of Natural History (Moskovska Street). The desing is of Dutch artists Tim Ayres and Rutger Fuchs and was done by students of Bulgarian Academy of Arts. LINK Poem in Sofia

Post Plovdiv (Пловдив)

The Stadium of Philippopolis

Plovdiv's history spans 6,000 years, with traces of a Neolithic settlement dating to roughly 4000 BC, ranking it among the world's oldest cities. Plovdiv was known in the West for most of its recorded history by the Greek name Philippopolis, which was introduced in 340 BC. Plovdiv was originally a Thracian city before later becoming a Greek and a major Roman one. LINK Plovdiv stadium

The Srebarna Biosphere Reserve

The Srebarna Biosphere Reserve, which also incorporates the Island of Devniya, is an area of just over 900 hectares situated in the northeast of Bulgaria on the River Danube. It includes Srebarna Lake which was connected to the Danube by a natural channel. This link was interrupted in the late 1940s when a dyke was constructed. Sustained pressure following the area achieving Ramsar protection in 1975, and being declared a UNESCO Biosphere reserve in 1977, saw the dyke partially removed at the end of the 1970s. In 1983 the Reserve was designated as a World Heritage Site and in 1990 became an Important Bird Area (IBA). A new canal was constructed in 1994 and the link finally restored. LINK Srebarna

Ivanovo Rock Church

The rock monastery “St. Archangel Michael” is situated 22 km from Ruse, in close proximity to the village of Ivanovo, within the borders of Natural Park “Rusenski Lom”. An asphalted road with designative board signs leads to the complex, and there is a parking lot at the foot of the rocks. A stair system in the rocks provides access for visitors to the various churches and chapels in the region. The monastery was founded in the 1220s by the monk Yoakim, who later became a Bulgarian patriarch. The Bulgarian tsars Yoan Asen ІІ (1218 - 1241), Yoan Alexander (1331 - 1371) and other representatives of the royal court, were among the monastery donators, and their donor’s portrait are preserved to the present day. The monastery joins a number of complexes of rock premises. Wall-paintings which show the specifics of Bulgarian church art in the 13th - 14th century are preserved in six of the temples. During the Second Bulgarian Empire (12th - 14th century) the monastery was established as a great spiritual and educational center. Wall inscriptions in the cells provide information about important historical events. LINK Ivanovo

Danube Bridge
Architect: Georgi Ovcharov

Opened on 20 June 1954 and designed by Georgi Ovcharov (according to other sources: V. Andreev), the bridge is 2,223.52 m (7,295.0 ft) long and is the only bridge over the Danube shared by Bulgaria and Romania as of 2011, with the other traffic being served by ferries and land routes. It has two decks, one for road (two lanes) and one for railway traffic, as well as sidewalks for pedestrians. The central part of the bridge (85 m) is mobile and can be lifted for oversized boats passage. The maintenance of the mobile part is Romania's responsibility and is periodically checked. The bridge was constructed in two and a half years with the aid of the Soviet Union. The Soviets named it the "Friendship" Bridge, but since the fall of the countries' socialist regimes, the bridge has had the more functional name of "Danube" Bridge. LINK Danube Bridge

Post Bucharest

Nicolae Ceaușescu
The People's Palace

Bucharest's unmistakable Palace of Parliament, due to its immense physical, psychic and historic stature, is perhaps the most controversial building in Romania. Meant to be the crowning achievement of 'Centrul Civic' or 'Civic Centre' - Communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu's ambitious urban development plan - the Palace of Parliament represents one of the most extravagant and expensive building projects in the history of mankind; certainly of the last century. Claiming superlative as the world's second-largest building by surface area (after the sneakily spacious US Pentagon), the Palace of Parliament is one of Romania's biggest tourist attractions, despite popular disdain. LINK Palace of Parliament

Post Sofia: Church of St Petka of the Saddlers

Църква „Света Петка Самарджийска“

The Church of St Petka of the Saddlers (Църква „Света Петка Самарджийска“ or St. Petka Samardjiiska) is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It is located in a semi-submerged shopping mall, and can be reached via the Serdika metro station. The church - constructed on the foundations of a former Roman temple - was first mentioned in the 16th century. Today it is known for its mural paintings from the 14th, 15th, 17th and 19th century depicting different scenes from the life of Jesus Christ: his birth, his miracles, his suffering, his crucifixion, his funeral and his rise. It acquired its present name due to it being a patron of the saddlers in the Middle Ages, who performed their rituals in the church.
