Robert Smithson symposium @ KABK The Hague

Book launch Robert Smithson: Art in Continual Movement
Friday
30 March 2012, at the symposium.
Venue:
Royal Academy of Art (KABK)
Prinsessegracht 4, The Hague

Alauda Publications proudly presents the symposium Rethinking Robert Smithson about the legacy of the artist Robert Smithson (1938–1973) and its relevance for contemporary artistic practices. In many ways, the artistic debates prevalent in the 1970s are recurring in our time: the relation between art and ecology, the position of the artist within a growing information and media society and the crisis of (neo) liberalism. Along the line of two thematic approaches related to Smithson's practice, Art and Ecology and The Cinematic Condition, topical concerns in artistic practice of the 1970s and today are reconsidered by internationally renowned theorists and artists.

Mircea Cantor

Concrete sculptures, drawings, artist publications, web projects, installations, videos, paintings, sound pieces, ready-made objects, site-specific interventions - there are many ways to make art and Cantor is fully conversant with all of them. But it is when he is on film that he is at his best. His moving images follow a precise if not simple pattern, with one single scenario and constant movement slowly building a narrative. At times the story follows a circular path, at other times there is a crescendo towards a grand finale, but both solutions never fail to create a climax of such colossal proportions that it puts even the most detached of viewers into a deeply reflective mood.

Oriol Arisa

Nací en 1980 en Sabadell (España).
Poco antes de que cayera el Muro, recuerdo que mis padres me enviaron a una academia para que...

"I was born in Sabadell, back in 1980. Shortly before the Wall fell, my parents sent me to an academy to learn to paint pretty pictures. At that time I did not like stuffed partridge copy, so for me despair of the teacher spent to develop my creativity. From there came a memorable picture with Gorbachev sticking pins in the ass to Ronald Reagan, causing chills to this good man. But the best was feeling comfortable with other children, sharing all our joke.
Then came years of learning, several teachers and a lot of pictures more or less fortunate. For me painting a lady remained distant and severe, which cost him smile.
Now I have a great time painting pictures, and exhibitions that I like is trying to preserve the carefree spirit that led us to laugh at ourselves, at that time for children. "

LEAP 13

The International Art Magazine of Contemporary China

COVER FEATURE: A TALE OF TIER TWO CITIES
Having resisted the temptation in our first two volumes, LEAP finally succumbs to the lulling call of China's second-tier cities for our thirteenth issue, visiting the two outlying megalopolises of Wuhan and Chongqing. Through firsthand observation of the local art ecology in both, our editors uncover shared stories, destinies, and elements of a mindset that may explain just why we ourselves choose to remain in Beijing.

Moloch - 2010 (oil on canvas, 50x40 cm)

As an artist I used always direct sensual experience as the basis of my visual work. I held irregularly written diaries, from the art school,
I began systematically capturing those experiences in the form of sketchbooks, photographic diaries lyrics, quotes. What has occurred. Later I tried several times the mechanism that Foucault describes in visual display systems for various exhibitions. Combining this collection of material in a whole may suggest an idea or an image of a subject with which you are working on...

Arsenale 2012 The First Kyiv International Biennial of Contemporary Art

Kyiv, the site of this exhibition, is an historic Slavic city and state located on routes of trade and migration between East, West, North and South. It absorbed Vikings from the North in the 9th Century CE and strengthened its international significance and at different times Huns, Khazars, Greeks, Mongols, Pechenegs, Scythians, Tatars and other nomadic peoples, many of whom originated in the Far East, have passed through and sometimes settled there. The diasporic heritage of the vast Eurasian landmass is reflected in the choice of works for this exhibition in which artists from the Ukraine and CIS states are shown with those from the North, South, West - and particularly the East.

Ayman Yossri Daydban @ Selma Feriani Gallery

In Identity, Daydban provides any participant of his work with a linguistic and  interpretive experience. He pushes us to reproduce his work through his own life experiences, provoking viewers to divide as well as conquer their shared and divergent memories. His answer to "Where are you from?" would be "The place is the mental space, e.g. the psychological, mental, cultural and civic venue outside the political and economic arena."

William Cordova

The Peruvian-born artist's work imbues displaced historical narratives with new meaning, conflating previous events with contemporary context and creating rich monuments to individuals, and cultural and ritual signifiers. His materials reflect the temporality of the subjects themselves, using discarded pages from books, reclaimed wood and stones, newsprint, found footage and salvaged cars to conjure intimate connections between far-reaching chronological points.

Among the works featured, the House that Frank Lloyd Wright built for Fred Hampton y Mark Clark, 2006, is a skeletal room-sized layout of the Chicago apartment where two Black Panther members were gunned down by police in a 1969 raid.

Krijn Giezen @ Katwijks Museum

Krijn Giezen was born in Noordwijk aan Zee in 1939. He studied at the Royal Academy for Arts and Design in The Hague from 1956 to 1961. Krijn Giezen felt himself in heart and soul to be a painter, an impressionist. He was an admirer of Monet, but also of the artists who worked in Katwijk around the 1900’s. Giezen painted in watercolours and oils, but eventually found linen stretched on a canvas too static for him. Then a fellow student showed him the work of the Spanish artist Antoni Tapiès (1923). The work of Tapiès inspired Krijn to start using old pieces of cloth and used clothing, especially jeans, in his own work. It became a sort of New Realism. Giezen graduated from Art School with a tapestry for which he received from the Pulchri Studio in the Hague the renowned Jacob Maris prize for the category design.

Marielle Buitendijk

Marielle Buitendijk paints, although her work looks strongly photographic. Using airbrushing and spray, Mariëlle Buitendijk creates almost monochrome images of vague, 'out of focus' amfitheaters, mountain tops or decorative flooring, all with a wonderful balance between painted skin and photographic reference.

Louie Rigano

For sure Vasily Kandinsky would have approved of it. And so will do all those who have a natural dislike for numbers, both for those of the long algebraic expressions and in a simpler way, and this is the case here, for the Roman ones of the classic: a out of date kitchen clock.
